Noy leads disaster meet
MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino called on local government officials yesterday to learn their lessons and be more prepared to save the lives of their constituents during disasters.
During the Roadshow on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation in Pasay City, the President said the Project NOAH or Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards is important, but more than modern technology and equipment, there must be vigilance and dedication in ensuring the readiness of localities in case of disasters.
Aquino said the discussions on disaster preparedness were not new and that the formula to deal with calamities and disasters was simple: detailed coordination and cooperation between the local and national governments.
The President said the role of local government units (LGUs) in society could not be disregarded because their officials were the ones directly dealing with the people.
When it comes to calamities, Aquino said local officials were the ones who would know the situation of their constituents and how best to address their concerns and needs.
The President reminded local officials that the life of every Juan dela Cruz was in their hands.
Aquino said the administration was continuously trying to empower local governments through the Local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Plan and that from April of this year, 92 percent of LGUs already got area-wide warning and alarm system; 86 percent had established their own evacuation centers while 78 percent got emergency response, rescue and medical teams.
He said every LGU must have its own disaster command and auxiliary command centers.
