House members ready ouster drive vs Corona
MANILA, Philippines -- Several members of the House of Representatives are now lining-up to sign the impeachment complaint against Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona.
At the House session today, reports reaching philstar.com revealed that more than 100 lawmakers have already signed the impeachment drive against Corona.
A lawmaker told philstar.com that the impeachment complaint against Corona will be voted in today’s session with its proponents targeting one-third of House members to deliver the impeachment complaint at the Senate.
The development came after Corona broke his silence this morning and called for the members of the judiciary to be vigilant as rumors for his impeachment were apparently hatched in the House against him.
In a flag-raising ceremony at the SC this morning, Corona said a "mobilization of a secret plan to oust me from office, by any means fair or foul" was on the move at the House.
While he remained silent for days on the attack against him "in the spirit of Christmas", he said: "Today, however, with the discovery of this scheme that will destroy our democracy. I am forced to call upon you to remain ready and vigilant."
In his message entitled "We Stand Together", Corona also noted that his silence was not a sign of weakness but "caution and patience".
"I have been quietly preparing and will be ready to take more determined steps in the coming days," he noted, while citing that he will lead the fight against those who dare destroy the Court.
"We shall not meekly walk away," the Chief Justice pointed out.
Today's statement of Corona was the first since he was frontally attack by President Benigno Aquino III during the Criminal Justice confab in Manila last week.
SC Spokesman Midas Marquez has also revealed that Malacanang was planning to destabilize the Higher Court.
He said the House may hasten the impeachment process against Corona by amending some own rules by “going straight to the plenary, and thereafter transmitting the articles of impeachment immediately to the Senate.”
