NGF lights up lives this Christmas

MANILA, Philippines - The Natasha Goulbourn Foundation (NGF) launched their annual fund-raising event “Light Up a Life” at Greenbelt 3 last Dec 1. NGF’s David Drilon, Dr. Romeo Enriquez, VP of the Philippine Psychiatric Association, NGF president Jean Goulbourn, Dr. Linda Milan of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Soe Nyunt-U, country representative of WHO, Dr. Patricia Licuanan, chair of the Commission of Higher Education (CHED), chef Colin Mackay of People’s Palace and Yoly Crisanto, head of Corporate Communications of Globe Telecom, were special guests invited to light the tree, signifying their support for the advocacy of the foundation.

“Very little attention is given to mental illnesses, particularly depression,” says Dr. Soe. “The stigma attached to it is a challenge in addressing these concerns properly. That is why foundations such as NGF are important – people have to be made aware. We are looking forward to working with organizations such as NGF towards a stronger campaign that will promote mental health.”

“We are still in the early stages,” says Jean Goulbourn, “but I am confident that with the WHO working proactively with us, we can make sure that people become more aware about depression.”

Donations from the event are used to continue and improve NGF’s programs, particularly the outreach program for OFW children. Initial studies have suggested that these children are more vulnerable to suffering from depression, especially during the holidays.

Mall goers were also treated to a special performance by OFW children from the foundation’s pilot project at Bay, Laguna, headed by Fr. Jessie Somosierra of the Saint Augustine Parish.

“I never knew that it was so rampant,” says one attendee, “but I found out today that this is a problem, and we should all try to help.”

The Natasha Goulbourn Foundation was started in 2007 with the goal of bringing depression to light by informing and educating the public about this treatable mental illness, to eliminate the stigma and consequently lessen the number of suicides.

According to the 2005 Asia Pacific Journal of Public Health, five lives are lost every day in the Philippines to suicide. Help NGF Light Up a Life this Christmas by visiting their booth at the ground floor of Greenbelt 3, in front of Topshop.
