MANILA, Philippines – Police and military operatives in Mindanao imposed tight security measures as the month-long fasting season of the Islamic community culminates tomorrow, Aug. 30.
Dubbed as Eid'l Fitr, the end of the Ramadan period will bring all Muslims in open fields to perform their congregational prayers.
ARMM police regional director Bienvenido Latag said hundreds of police operatives will be deployed in areas where prayers are to be held.
The police are expecting thousands of Muslims to perform the rites in several public grounds in Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, and the island provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi. Muslims in Metro Manila usually converge at Quirino Grandstand for their early morning prayers during the Eid'l Fitr.
Latag said the security preparations are meant to prevent any attempt to disrupt the Muslim festivities.
“Security arrangements have been coordinated with the joint ceasefire committee of the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to avoid unnecessary skirmishes," Latag said.
Eid'l Fitr is celebrated after the completion of the month long fasting period of Muslims for them to show their joy for health, strength and opportunities in life.
It is also a time for Muslims to share their blessings to the poor constituents in their respective communities.
