TRB mum on tax imposition on toll rates

- Aie Balagtas See -

MANILA, Philippines - The Toll Regulatory Board has remained tight-lipped on the recent Supreme Court (SC) decision that allowed the imposition of tax on toll rates, saying it has no official position yet on the issue.

In a text message Sunday, spokesman Julius Corpus said he cannot yet issue comments because the board has yet to formally receive a copy of the ruling.

“The board has yet to receive a copy of the SC decision. I can’t give other comments until the board makes a decision/position on the issue,” Corpus told The STAR.

The court last week gave the Bureau of Internal Revenue the green light to impose a 12-percent value added tax on toll – a move seen by Albay Gov. Joey Salceda as a means to increase the toll by almost 300 percent.

BIR Commissioner Kim Henares, for her part, welcomed the decision and said the increase will be implemented in August.
