PCSO sets deadline for 'Loterya' bids

- Perseus Echeminada -

Manila, Philippines - Gaming companies interested in operating the PCSO Loterya ng Bayan (PLB) have until the end of the month to submit their applications, said the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO).

PCSO assistant manager for online operations Remeliza Gabuyo said all applicants, including the existing operators of the defunct Small Town Lotteries (STL), must submit all requirements before June 30.

She said at least 180 gaming corporations have applied for the authority to operate PLB, which is expected to be fully operational by July this year.

Loterya ng Bayan was launched last February by the new PCSO board headed by its chairperson Margarita Juico. It aims to curb patronage of jueteng and other illegal numbers games and to increase funds for charity.

According to a report by the Philippine National Police, the proliferation of illegal numbers games was caused by lack of monitoring of STL, which allegedly had become a front for jueteng.

The PCSO has allowed existing STL operators to shift operations to PLB if they comply with the requirements.

STL outlets that fail to comply with the requirements will be considered illegal and will be subject to the anti-illegal gambling raids conducted by the police.
