Workers reporting on Monday to get double pay

Manila, Philippines - Workers nationwide can either enjoy a long weekend or report for work and get additional pay.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) yesterday reported that workers nationwide who would opt to work on Monday would get extra pay for their services.

Labor Undersecretary Danilo Cruz said June 20 is a special non-working holiday, thus workers who would report for work are entitled to receive 30 percent of their daily basic pay.

“Under the law, workers are entitled to get 130 percent of their daily rate for the first eight hours of work and another 30 percent of hourly rate for work in excess of eight hours,” Cruz said.

If the workday falls on the employee’s rest day, Cruz said the employer shall pay the worker 150 percent of the daily pay for the first eight hours of work and additional 30 percent of hourly rate in work in excess of eight hours.

Those who would choose not to work and would rather enjoy a long weekend are not getting any pay unless there is a favorable company policy or collective bargaining agreement granting payment for a special day.

Cruz said DOLE has issued the necessary advisory on holiday pay to ensure the welfare and protection of workers and for employers to observe labor standards.

Malacañang earlier declared June 20 as a special non-working holiday to emphasize the national and historical importance of national hero Jose Rizal’s 150th birth anniversary.

“Whether they would be working or enjoying a long weekend, the special day would give all Filipinos the opportunity to commemorate Rizal’s patriotic deeds and sacrifices for the country and rekindle their admiration for the national hero,” Cruz said.
