MANILA, Philippines – The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is considering the use of solar power for traffic lights.
MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino said he has consulted the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) on the project.
He said using solar power for streetlights could save the agency at least P4.5 million every month in operations and maintenance expenses.
MMDA spokesperson Tina Velasco said lack of funding prevents the agency from implementing the project. The agency needs at least P3.5 billion to convert traffic signals to the LED (light emitting diode) type used in other countries.
“Right now there are several suppliers who can provide the solar panels for traffic lights. But what we don’t have is the capital outlay for the project. That is why we have asked the DOST to help us find an inexpensive way to make this project possible,” she said.
Velasco said the MMDA is considering sourcing the funds for the solar power project from the Road User’s Tax.
