House hunting for Noy still on

- Delon Porcalla -

MANILA, Philippines - President-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III is now considering the Goldenberg Mansion in the Malacañang compound as his official residence.

He said, however, that he would still prefer staying in their family home on Times Street in West Triangle, Quezon City.

Other houses he is considering are the Bahay Pangarap, which, to him, “seems to be the best” because there would be minimal remodeling work, and the Premier Guesthouse, which he plans to use as his office, together with the executive secretary.

“One would not want to have the living and office sections in the same building,” Aquino said.

He said he would go home to Times Street from time to time to relax.

“If this house becomes unused, it will deteriorate and I wouldn’t want that to happen,” he said. “And if I want to breathe a little, there’s nothing like home.”

Presidential Management Staff head Elena Bautista-Horn said the Goldenberg Mansion would require some work because it is now used as a museum containing the antique collection of the Office of the President.

She said Bahay Pangarap, which has already been inspected by the Aquino transition team, is more suitable as a residence because of its amenities and security.

Aquino initially expressed concern about the Bahay Pangarap because it does not have rooms for other people who would be staying there with him.

Horn said additional rooms could be constructed at the Bahay Pangarap to accommodate the aides and close-in security of Aquino.

The Premier Guest House, Horn said, is also a viable choice since former President Joseph Estrada used it as his official residence during his term. – With Marvin Sy
