- Roel Pareño, Jaime Laude -

ZAMBOANGA CITY , Philippines  , Philippines  - Three people who were kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf in Basilan last May 27 were found dead.

Basilan Bishop Martin Jumoad said he received information that the hostages were found dead late Friday in Barangay Sukaten, Sumisip town.

An encounter occurred in the area Friday, he added.

Basilan police director Senior Superintendent Antonio Mendoza identified the victims as Claudio Mañanita, an employee of the Manggal Agrarian Reform Beneficiary Development Cooperative, and beauticians Rolando Francisco Jr. and Dariel Quintella.

Marines retrieved their remains and brought them to their camp in Barangay Manggal, Mendoza said.

Police officers are trying to determine whether the kidnappers killed the victims and “how they were executed by their captors,” Mendoza said

The kidnappers had demanded a P1-million ransom for the three hostages, he added.

The Abu Sayyaf snatched the victims while on board a passenger jeepney near Barangay Manggal last May 27.
