GMA wants to be remembered for 'dedication to job'

- Marvin Sy -

MANILA, Philippines - President Arroyo wants to be remembered for many things, but foremost among them is her dedication to her job.

With less than a month before she steps from office, Mrs. Arroyo is busy working on securing her legacy as a hard working chief executive, her spokesman said yesterday.

Deputy presidential spokesman Rogelio Peyuan said Mrs. Arroyo wanted to be remembered as a hands-on leader who could very well be considered one of the most hardworking presidents in the country’s history.

Peyuan admitted that there are a number of programs introduced by the President, some of which were very unpopular.

But these programs, Peyuan said, were implemented out of the need for further development of the country.

This made Mrs. Arroyo one of the most hated and unpopular presidents if the surveys are to be believed, he said.

Malacañang officials, however, are optimistic that history would eventually vindicate President Arroyo.

Peyuan added the President wanted to be remembered for having visited almost every part of the country during her nine years in office.

Her appearance and visits gave most of the remote and inaccessible barangays electricity, Peyuan said.

He said Mrs. Arroyo also takes pride in having the foresight to prepare the country for several unforeseen circumstances, including the global financial crisis.

While several economies went into recession, the Philippines managed to stay afloat due to sound economic policies and management under her administration, Peyuan said.

The Philippine economy was able to register 38 consecutive quarters of growth.

“A lot of people have yet to see the benefits of what she has done. She has planted the seeds and the fruits would be harvested in the future,” Peyuan said.
