US citizens in RP urged to assess security during elections

- Pia Lee-Brago -

MANILA, Philippines - The United States urged its nationals in the Philippines to assess their personal security and avoid public gathering places, in connection with the May 10 election as sporadic violence may occur throughout the country before, during and after the election.

The US embassy in Manila issued yesterday a warden message telling its citizens to pay attention to the media for Philippine government announcements regarding areas likely to experience election-related violence.

“US citizens living and working in the Philippines are urged to assess their personal security, to remain aware of their surroundings, to keep a low profile, and to avoid public gathering places, including high-profile events, in connection with the May 10 elections,” the embassy’s warden message said.

The advisory said that political or other demonstrations could materialize on fairly short notice and US nationals, if and when they learn of such, are advised to plan their travel accordingly by avoiding crowds and exercising caution when traveling.

Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom also urged its citizens to exercise a high degree of caution near polling stations tomorrow.
