MILF hopes peace talks to continue

-

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) hopes to see a continuation of the peace process in the next administration.

“Hopefully, the peace process would proceed even with whoever is the next president,” MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu said.

But Kabalu said the MILF has not given up on an interim peace agreement before June 30, the end of President Arroyo’s term.

“We are not giving up on the possibility that an interim agreement would be signed before she (Mrs. Arroyo) steps down,” Kabalu stressed.

He said an interim agreement with the Arroyo administration would pave the way for the continuation of the peace process with the next government.

“What is important is we made our stand clear that we also would want that interim agreement signed,” Kabalu said.

An interim agreement would cover past agreements signed since the peace process started in 1997.

Kabalu said it is noteworthy that the Malaysia-led International Monitoring Team (IMT) “is in place” and its membership has “been expanded. – Edith Regalado
