3 students to join Asean contest

- Rainier Allan Ronda -

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Education (DepEd) will send three Filipino students to represent the country in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Regional Drawing Competition in Bangkok, Thailand this month.

The ASEAN drawing contest will be held in line with the 2009 ASEAN Day for Disaster Management and the International Day for Disaster Reduction.

Chosen to represent the Philippines were Jamia Mei Tolentino and Trisha Co Reyes, both Grade 5 students of St. Stephen High School, and Jerika Shi, a grade 6 student at St. Jude Catholic School in Manila.

Education Secretary Jesli Lapus expressed hope that the three would do as well as last year when the Philippines landed second and third place in the competition.

In selecting the country’s representatives to the ASEAN contest, the DepEd through its Task Team on the Promotion of Disaster Risk Management Education in Schools conducted a nationwide competition.

School children between 8-12 years old were invited to participate in the drawing contest and submit drawings on the theme “Save Hospitals: Hospitals of ASEAN Safe from Disasters.”
