Expect scattered rains this week, Pagasa tells public

- Evelyn Macairan -

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) yesterday reported that scattered rains would persist this week.

The rains will come even up to the early part of this week because of a tail end of a cold front affecting Luzon and an intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) in Mindanao, according to Pagasa weather observer Alzar Aurelio.

“At times, it would be cloudy and there would be scattered rains during the week,” said Aurelio.

Based on its 5 a.m. weather forecast, Aurelio said, Luzon will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms while Mindanao will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms.

“The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to at times cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening,” he said.

Moderate to occasionally strong winds blowing from the southeast will prevail over the eastern section of Luzon and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to occasionally rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the southwest and southeast will prevail with slight moderate seas.

Filipinos might experience scattered rainshowers but Pagasa Director Prisco Nilo yesterday reiterated that it is still summer.

“It is not yet the rainy season. We have not yet declared rainy season. One of the signs that we are looking in order to declare rainy season is that the southwest monsoon should be in place, but it has not yet happened,” he said.

Aside from that, the ITCZ returned to its normal position in Mindanao.

“During the past few days, we experienced unusual weather because the ITCZ reached Metro Manila, when it should only be limited in Mindanao,” Nilo added.
