2 mild earthquakes hit Northern Luzon, Mindanao

Two mild earthquakes hit parts of Northern Luzon and Mindanao yesterday afternoon, according to the United States Geological Survey.

No casualty or damage was initially reported.

However, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquakes were not felt in the country.

The first quake of magnitude 4.7 occurred at 3:12 p.m., with the epicenter traced at 75 kilometers east-northeast of Surigao; or 120 km south-southeast of Guiuan, Samar; or 135 km north-northeast of Butuan, Mindanao; or 755 km southeast of Manila.

The second tremor measuring magnitude 4.8 was recorded at 4:15 p.m. with the epicenter located at 135 kms north-northeast of Laoag, Ilocos Norte.

The USGS said the epicenter of the second quake was also 150 km south-southwest of Basco, Batanes; 515 km north of Manila; or 640 km south of Taipei, Taiwan. – Helen Flores
