RP reaffirms commitment to UN convention vs corruption

The Philippines has reaffirmed its commitment to adhere to the provisions of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAP) and to actively take part in the work of the world body in furthering the implementation of this landmark instrument.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo renewed the Philippines’ commitment as it joined the international community in observing International Anti-Corruption Day last Tuesday.

Dec. 9 of every year has been designated as “International Anti-Corruption Day” by the United Nations General Assembly in its Resolution No. 58/4 adopted on Oct. 31, 2003.

The date commemorates the High-Level Political Conference held in Merida, Mexico on Dec. 9 to 11, 2003, during which UNCAP was first opened for signature.

The UNCAP, which entered into force in December 2005, represents a universally accepted comprehensive platform for fighting corruption. It is the first legally binding, international anti-corruption instrument and provides a unique opportunity to mount a global response to a global problem.

Focusing on the theme “Your NO Counts,” the UN’s anti-corruption campaign for 2008-2009 highlights the importance of a positive and pro-active stance against corruption, with the UNCAP as a key tool in fighting corruption worldwide.
