Envoy thanks RP for adherence to One-China policy

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – The Chinese ambassador has cited positive developments in his country’s relationship with Taiwan and thanked the Philippines for its consistent adherence to the One-China policy.

“The ‘One China’ principle is the political basis of the peaceful development of the cross-Strait relations. The Chinese government will adhere to the One China principle and oppose any separatist activities for Taiwan independence,” China’s Ambassador to the Philippines Song Tao said in his speech at the celebration of the 59th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China at the Manila Hotel.

Song said China will stick to its policy of promoting cross-Strait relations to pave the way for a peaceful reunification with Taiwan.

Song also cited the positive momentum of its bilateral relations with the Philippines.

Song’s message came on the heels of Taiwan’s appeal to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for a more positive approach to dealing with what China considers a renegade province.

Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) representative Donald Lee has also urged the Chinese Ambassador to initiate more discussions on issues affecting Beijing and Taipei.

Last June, Taiwan declared sovereign claim over the Taiping Islet, the biggest island in the Spratlys, saying the disputed island is “undoubtedly” part of its territory. Lee said Taiwanese officials will continue to visit Taiping which has a 1,150 meter long runway built in 2006 by Taiwan’s defense ministry.

“Of course. That’s our territory. We still hold that,” he said when asked if the visits will continue.

Lee said the airfield may be used for Taipei’s humanitarian operations.

The Spratlys are claimed in whole or in part by several Asian countries including the Philippines.        – Pia Lee-Brago
