Theology students back reproductive health bill
MANILA, Philippines – Students of Catholic theology called yesterday on the Catholic Church to listen to the voice of the Catholic faithful on the issue of the Reproductive Health and Population Development Bill pending in Congress.
“Millions of Catholics sincerely believe that the Church teaching on birth control is antiquated and needs to be changed,” the students said.
The students said only natural birth control is considered moral under the encyclical of Pope Paul VI in 1968.
Pope Paul VI rejected the advice of a commission of theologians to allow artificial birth control, the students added.
The students said the Reproductive Health and Population Development Bill promotes freedom of choice for women but does not impose an ideal two children per family.
Couples must be given a wider choice of methods of family planning in order to decide what is most suitable for their needs, the students added. – Mayen Jaymalin
