DOT steps up drive for RP inclusion in 7 wonders of the world

Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Tourism is now hitting the campaign trail to put the Philippines on the list of the world’s great natural wonders.

Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano called on the public and local government officials to cast their votes online and place Tubbataha Reef and two other top tourist destinations in the country in the new seven wonders of the world.

“The popularity of this Internet poll brings to focus the importance of caring for the natural wonders we are blessed with. I encourage everyone to cast their vote since this will help promote the destinations,” Durano said.

Durano added the country’s inclusion in the list of seven wonders of the world would not only promote the destinations but will also ensure environmental protection.

“The Department (of Tourism) joins hands with other groups that desire to see at least one of the Philippine nominees in the seven wonders of nature. But we also should bear in mind the greater challenge of being good stewards,” Durano said.

Durano called on tourism authorities and private tourism enterprises to collaborate on adapting earth-friendly business practices, recycling and waste disposal management and educating visitors on responsible tourist behavior and other activities.

The Philippines currently has three nominated destinations in the top 77 list.

As of May 8, Tubbataha Reef and Chocolate Hills are the eighth and ninth positions respectively, while the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River is in 20th place.

The New 7 Wonders of Nature is an Internet poll launched by a non-profit organization based in Switzerland, which aims to list the world’s seven most outstanding natural environments.

“We’re pleased that the Philippines is ranking well. Anything that will help people know more about the country is appreciated,” said Tourism Undersecretary for Planning and Promotions Eduardo Jarque Jr.
