Romulo to solidify cultural ties with Iran

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo left for Iran last Saturday to discuss with ranking Iranian government officials key bilateral, regional and international development issues.

The three-day official visit is upon the invitation of Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

Romulo said he and Mottaki will sign the Memorandum of Understanding on Cultural, Scientific and Educational Exchange Programme “to solidify our countries’ relations” in these areas.

He said the Philippine government is looking forward to sending a delegation to the 5th RP-Iran Joint Commission Meeting in Tehran later this year to review the state of the two countries’ relations and seek ways to further enhance them.

Romulo said he would also touch base with the Filipino community in Iran and update them on recent positive developments in the Philippines.

“During my meetings, I will likewise convey the Philippine government’s profound appreciation for Iran’s consistent support in our interfaith dialogue initiatives, as well as our Observer Status bid in the Organization of Islamic Conference,” Romulo said in his departure statement.

He said he would also seek Iran’s support for the candidacy of Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago to the International Court of Justice. – Reinir Padua
