Nursing still top course

MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) said yesterday that nursing remains the most sought-after course among college enrollees this school year 2008-2009.

The projected enrollment of CHED’s Office of Policy, Planning, Research and Information (OPPRIS) for this June places enrollees for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) education to have the highest number among other courses or disciplines, with about 497,000 expected enrollees this year.

Next to nursing, the Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management was seen to have the next highest number of enrollees, with some 134,600 students.

The B.S. in Computer Science is the third most sought-after course, with more than 100,700 students expected to take it.

This is followed by Criminology, with about 96,900 expected enrollees; Information Technology, 95,300 enrollees; Accountancy, 89,500 enrollees; Business Management, 82,800; Elementary Education, 67,000; English Education, 52,300; and B.S. in Electronics and Communications Engineering, 48,200.

CHED Commissioner Dr. Nona S. Ricafort noted that most of the “in demand” courses among students are those that have professional licensure examinations with the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).  – Rainier Allan Ronda
