Summer Math camps offered
MANILA, Philippines – The Mathematics Trainers’ Guild-Philippines (MTG) will start holding summer training camps for young Filipino math wizards to find the country’s bets for international math contests this year.
MTG-Philippines said it has chosen elementary and high school students who will attend the 2008 Young Mathematicians’ In-House Training Program slated on March 25-28 in Cebu City and March 31-April 3 in Tagaytay City.
According to Dr. Simon Chua, MTG president and the first and only awardee of the internationally prestigious Paul Erdos Award for Mathematicians, the MTG training program is a stage where they can strengthen the mathematical skills and competence of the trainees by equipping them with effective strategies in solving math problems.
The training camp aims to improve the young math wizards’ speed and accuracy, enrich them with various concepts and expose them to international math correspondence contests such as the Euclid Contest and Kangaroo Contest, Chua said.
He added that the training will develop higher order thinking skills, cultivate creativity and improve the trainees’ analytical ability in order for them to withstand the pressure of international math competitions. – Rainier Allan Ronda
