MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Military Academy Superintendent Maj. Gen. Leopoldo Maligalig has barred politics from this year’s PMA alumni homecoming to be held in Baguio City this weekend.
“The PMA is hallowed ground to us and we would like to keep it that way,” he said.
Brig. Gen. Arthur Tabaquero, PMA Alumni Association president, said as in the past, PMA graduates are discouraged from giving political color to the homecoming which is intended as a day for renewing ties with classmates and their alma mater.
“Not only the alumni, but also everyone else is reminded to keep the event a fun-filled, wholesome family affair devoid of any activity or actions that have political color,” he said.
President Arroyo, an adopted member of PMA “Makatarungan” Class of 1978, was invited as guest of honor and speaker, but she has since cancelled her trip to Baguio due to security concerns.
The Cavalier Awards will be given to several outstanding alumni, including Criminal Investigation and Detection Group chief Jesus Versoza (PMA Class 1976) for command and administration; Brig. Gen. Oscar Rabena (1978), wing commander of the Air Force 15th Strike Wing for staff functions; Col. Ricardo Visaya (1983) for army operations; Senior Superintendent Asher Dolina (1983) for police operations; Randy Bance (1977) for Air Force operations; and Chief Superintendent Benjamin Belarmino (1977) for special field (sports).
This year’s alumni homecoming will be capped by a parade at Borromeo Field, considered a sacred place inside the PMA. – James Mananghaya
