CBCP leads observance of National Migrants Sunday

MANILA, Philippines – The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) will lead the observance of National Migrants Sunday Celebration on Feb. 10.

The CBCP said recently that they would be shifting their attention to the children of migrant workers, many of whom experience a difficult adjustment when they are reunited with their parents who were working abroad.

In celebration of National Migrants Sunday, the CBCP said in its website cbcpnews.com that they would provide assistance to the children of migrant workers who have been petitioned by their parents.

The CBCP-Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (ECMI) said they would carefully study the situation of the young migrants and create public awareness of their condition.

The CBCP-ECMI does not have the exact number of young migrants who have gone abroad to join their parents, although statistics show that there are more than eight million overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

CBCP-ECMI executive secretary Fr. Edwin Corros said to help address the concern of these young migrants, some dioceses have implemented a program called “Sons and Daughters of OFWs”.

The program, which would be adapted by some Catholic schools in dioceses where migrants’ ministry is most active, is centered on values formation and guidance counseling.

Corros said many young people are now moving to other countries where their parents are working and living.
