80 QC teachers to get training

Some 80 teachers and principals of nine Quezon City public schools will get free development training from the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and the National Institute of Education in Singapore.

The Filipino teachers were chosen by Singaporean philanthropic organization Temasek Foundation as beneficiaries of their Leaders and Educators in Asia Programme (LEAP), which seeks to develop innovative and world-class educators in covered schools.

Under LEAP, Temasek Foundation will sponsor the post-graduate studies and other professional development courses of school principals and teachers of selected public schools at Singapore’s NIE, the developed city-state’s premier institute for teachers, and ADMU.

After their training, the chosen teachers and principals are expected to share their knowledge with their respective schools.

Quezon City was selected as the first beneficiary of LEAP in the country after Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr. assured local government support for the undertaking.

The LEAP project in the Philippines was launched yesterday at the ADMU campus in Quezon City with Temasek Foundation chairman Goh Geok Khim gracing the event.

“The launch of LEAP is a significant occasion for Temasek Foundation as it marks the first of many partnership programs that Temasek Foundation will support outside of Singapore, and this is taking place barely seven months since our official launch in May 2007,” Goh said.

Goh said Temasek Foundation will enhance educational leadership and teacher-training capabilities of Filipino mentors.
