Several other prominent political families were left in the dark in last Monday’s elections.
The most prominent of them were the Acostas of Bukidnon who were virtually wiped out from the political scene in the province.
Incumbent Rep. Nereus Acosta lost his bid against re-electionist Gov. Jose Zubiri in the gubernatorial race. Zubiri handily won with 323,238 votes against Acosta, with only 70,993.
His sister, Malou, also lost to administration candidate Candido Pancrudo in the congressional race.
Another loser in this district is former election commissioner Virgilio Garcillano who had conceded defeat in the early hours of the count on Monday.
Congressman Acosta’s mother Socorro, who is mayor of Manolo Fortich town, also lost to Ricardo Quino.
Socorro Acosta was a three-term representative of the first congressional district before running for mayor.
Another political family that was trounced in Monday’s voting was the Sandoval family. Former congressman Vicente Sandoval, who tried to reclaim his seat as representative of
Alvarez received 71,328 against Sandoval’s 43,631. The canvassing board proclaimed Alvarez yesterday.
Incumbent Malabon-Navotas Rep. Federico Sandoval, who ran for mayor of Navotas, lost to Tobias “Toby Tiangco who was proclaimed yesterday.
On the other hand, his brother, Alvin, is still waiting for the outcome of his congressional fight for the Malabon-Navotas district against Josephine Lacson Noel.
Other political families like the Fajardos and the Villareals, who used to dominate the congressional posts in Nueva Ecija, shared the same fate as the Josons in the province.

The Fajardos reigned as congressman and mayor from 1992 to 1998. In 2001, Pacifico ran for governor while Leonora ran for Congress but lost badly to the Josons and the Umalis.
In this week’s polls, Pacifico lost in a four-cornered fight in the congressional race while Leonora lost Palayan City Vice Mayor Romeo Capinpin.
The Villareals have also seen their end after former representative Julita Villareal lost her bid to stage a comeback.
