KORONADAL CITY – Die-hard fans and supporters of world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao have been angered by reports that Pacquiao will no longer be given a hero’s welcome by officials of nearby General Santos City upon his arrival next month after his fight with Mexican Jorge Solis in San Antonio, Texas.
Pacquiao fans scattered across General Santos City barangays expressed disappointment after city Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. said he will no longer give Pacquiao a hero’s welcome next month.
According to reports, Acharon told audiences during turnover rites of the Special Education (SPED) school building in barangay San Isidro Tuesday that he will no longer roll out the red carpet for Pacquiao.
"That is my decision," a reliable source quoted Acharon as saying. "(Pacquiao) decided to enter politics."
Acharon’s statement reportedly sparked anger among Pacquiao’s fans and supporters, not just in General Santos but in other parts of South Cotabato. Acharon stood as one of the sponsors at Pacquiao’s wedding some years back.
In a long-distance interview with The STAR, Acharon insisted that his statement had been "misinterpreted."
Pacquiao is eyeing a congressional seat in the first district of South Cotabato on the administration ticket. He will face incumbent Rep. Darlene Antonino-Custodio.
