Pimentel pays tribute to outgoing RP envoy to Washington

-
Ambassador to Washington Albert del Rosario, who is bowing out of the diplomatic service, is worthy of gratitude and appreciation from the Filipino people for his exemplary service in representing his country in the United States, Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. said yesterday.

"In terms of performance, the way Ambassador Del Rosario has done his job would be difficult to surpass," Pimentel said. "I understand the Filipino community in the United States speaks highly of him. His resignation is a loss to the country’s diplomatic community."

Pimentel added that media reports since last year indicate that Malacañang has been eyeing certain prominent personalities for appointment to the premier diplomatic post.

"I guess, Ambassador Del Rosario, like the gentleman that he is, is voluntarily giving way to the rumors that he is on the way to pave the way for the appointment of people close to (President Arroyo)," he said.

Pimentel also lauded Del Rosario’s achievements as a diplomat after he was recalled by Malacañang.

Del Rosario, whose resignation takes effect on July 8, has expressed his intention to return to the private sector, Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said earlier this week.

"It is with much regret that I have accepted Ambassador Albert del Rosario’s resignation," Mrs. Arroyo said in a press statement. "He leaves government with an exemplary record as a diplomat and public servant. I commend him for his service to the nation and wish him all the best as he returns to his life as a private citizen."

The President also commended Del Rosario for playing a "crucial role in nurturing our relations with our key ally, broadening the frontiers of our cooperation and partnership and seeing us through common challenges that faced both our nations."

However, some news reports said Del Rosario did not step down voluntarily, but was recalled by Malacañang.
