Islamic classes to be taught daily?

-
The Department of Education (DepEd) wants Madrasah classes to be held daily for Muslim students by next school year.

Education Undersecretary for Muslim Affairs Manaros Boransing said that due to the lack of classroom facilities in public schools, Madrasah classes can only be held every Saturday for Muslim students.

Boransing said in their recent visit to different public schools in Manila last Saturday, DepEd officials were pleased with how the Madrasah curriculum developed by the department is carried out in Manila, Quezon City, Pateros and Taguig.

He added that parents of the Muslim students were all happy seeing their children learning how to speak, write and read Arabic.

In previous years, Madrasah was only taught in Mindanao and inside mosques in Metro Manila so followers of Islam could read the Koran, the holy book for Muslims.

Boransing said that by next year, the DepEd will add more classrooms so public schools can hold Madrasah classes more than once a week. Sandy Araneta
