Ramos daughter’s hospital stay may be extended

Caroline Ramos Sembrano, 45, daughter of former President Fidel Ramos, may have to remain confined at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center (AHMC) a bit longer to recuperate from a seven-hour head operation.

A friend of the Ramos family said Sembrano underwent surgery because of the head injuries she sustained after she was sideswiped by a water delivery truck late Thursday night in Parañaque City.

The STAR learned the other night that Sembrano had to undergo an operation to relieve swelling in her brain.

"I doubt that she could already leave the hospital by today," the source said. "It might take a while for the wounds to heal. The doctors had to operate on her head and, although it was a successful operation, it took seven hours."

The source was one of Sembrano’s first visitors at the hospital and reported that Sembrano was conscious and out of danger.

The STAR also learned Sembrano may be transferred from the AHMC intensive care unit (ICU) to a private room where she can recuperate.

Sembrano was crossing President’s Avenue in Barangay BF Homes when a water delivery truck driven by Romeo Cruz sideswiped her.

The left side mirror of the Isuzu Elf truck struck Sembrano, who was thrown three meters from the point of impact. The force of the collision knocked her unconscious and the back of her head bled where it hit the ground.

After the mishap, Cruz flagged down a passing Kia Besta van. The van’s driver brought Sembrano to Parañaque Medical Center and Cruz boarded his truck and sped off. Sembrano was later transferred to AHMC.

The truck, with license plate WKY-227, is owned and operated by Francisco Water Delivery.

Parañaque City police criminal investigation division chief, Inspector Glenn Tigson said they filed charges of reckless imprudence resulting in serious physical injuries against Cruz before the city prosecutor’s office.

Cruz was immediately captured in his residence in Taguig during a police operation early Friday morning. Tigson said Cruz will be able to post bail.
