Workers paid double on Sunday

- Mayen Jaymalin -
Good news.

Workers who will report for work on Sunday, National Heroes’ Day, will get double their daily take-home pay, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said yesterday.

Under the labor law, employees who are required to work on a regular holiday shall get compensation on that day equivalent to twice or 200 percent of their regular daily rate.

For services rendered in excess of eight hours, employees are entitled to overtime pay of at least 30 percent on top of the 200 percent salary rate.

If Sunday happens to be the employee’s scheduled rest day, he shall be paid additional compensation or premium pay of 30 percent of the holiday rate of 200 percent or a total of 260 percent.

And if the employee is required to work beyond eight hours on a regular holiday that happens to be his scheduled rest day, then he is entitled to an overtime pay rate of at least 30 percent on top of the 260 percent holiday salary rate or a total of 338 percent.

On the other hand, those who will not report for work on Sunday are still covered by the holiday pay law and will, therefore, get their regular daily take home pay.

Employees covered by the holiday pay law shall be given pay equivalent to their regular basic pay even if no work is rendered, provided they are present or on leave of absence on the working day immediately preceding the regular holiday.
