Special necrological service for Arcellana

National Artist for Literature Francisco Arcellana will be honored by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in a special necrological service on Aug. 6, at 9 a.m. at the CCP Main Theatre.

His interment will follow in the afternoon at the Libingan ng mga Bayani at Fort Bonifacio in Makati City. He died last Thursday morning due to multiple-organ system failure. His remains lie at the Parish of the Holy Sacrifice at the University of the Philippines-Diliman.

Arcellana was the first director of UP Creative Writing Center when it was launched in 1979. He was the recipient of many writing fellowships and awards. He dedicated his life to teaching, taking many young writers under his wing. On April 2, 1989, the U.P. conferred on him its highest accolade, a doctorate in humane letters, honoris causa. He was proclaimed National Artist the following year. He was born on Sept. 6, 1916 in Manila.
