Filipino guard slain by US cop

A Filipino security guard in Las Vegas, Nevada was mercilessly shot dead by state police due to a simple traffic violation, the victim’s friend said in a long-distance call to The STAR’s sister paper, Ang Pilipino Star Ngayon.

The victim was identified as Bernardo Caderto, 55, who worked at the CPS security agency in Henderson City, Nevada. He resided at 2691 Hollow Vale in the same city.

According to the report by Caderto’s friend, who wished to remain anonymous, the incident occurred Sunday afternoon as the victim was traversing Freeway 95 on his way to work.

Caderto’s vehicle was apprehended by police for overspeeding and he was told to pull over.

The Nevada Police Department (NP) refused to give the name of its officer who allegedly shot Caderto, claiming that the Filipino pulled out a knife and was about to attack the policeman.

The NPD officer’s shooting of Caderto is however still considered a crime because the victim was armed with an inferior weapon. –Walter Bollozos
