Villar seeks Lenten truce with MILF, NPA

Former Speaker Manuel Villar Jr. asked the government and armed groups fighting it yesterday to observe a cessation of hostilities at least for the duration of the Lenten season beginning this Sunday, which is Palm Sunday.

"In line with the observance of Holy Week, I urge the government to unilaterally declare a ceasefire with both the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the New People’s Army," he said.

He said he is confident that such a declaration would be matched by a similar gesture on the part of Muslim secessionists and communist rebels.

He said a ceasefire would enable the protagonists and their families to observe Holy Week in peace.

Villar expressed the hope that a Lenten truce would pave the way for a lasting peace all over the country, a new beginning that he said could jumpstart the economy.

He pointed out that armed hostilities in many parts of the country are scaring away potential local and foreign investors.

"We cannot lure investors in areas where the threat of armed conflict persists," he said.

Villar added that he was confident that the Arroyo administration would be able to make great strides in promoting peace all over the country. – Jess Diaz
