Namfrel endorses Tanjuatco as poll czar

The National Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) has formally endorsed former congressman Emigdio Tanjuatco Jr. as chairman of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

In a statement, Namfrel head Jose Concepcion Jr. said Tanjuatco is being supported by various church organizations, business groups, labor unions and other sectors to be the replacement of Comelec chairman Harriet Demetriou who will be retiring this week.

Concepcion said Namfrel is also recommending lawyers Resurreccion Borra and Jose Luis Martin Gascon as Comelec commissioners.

"The elections are very important," Concepcion said. "The credibility of the polls primarily rests on a credible Comelec. The challenge of the times is to elect new Congress and new local government officials in a clean and honest elections."
