Private education conference set

The Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations (COCOPEA), in cooperation with the Fund for Assistance to Private Education (FAPE), will be conducting a Young Executives National Conference on Jan. 11-12 at the PHINMA Development Center in Tagaytay City. The conference will revolve around the theme, "Succession Planning for Professionalism in Philippine Private Educational Institutions."

The primary objective of the seminar-conference is to increase understanding by management theories and practical applications involved in enabling educational institutions to make the transition from congregationally-managed and family-run companies into professional corporations.

The conference will start with registration on Thursday, Jan. 11, at 9 a.m. and will end on Friday, Jan. 12, at 1:30 p.m. The keynote address on "Professionalism in Philippine Educational Institutions" will be delivered by former Educational Secretary Armand Fabella who is currently the chairman of the board of trustees of Jose Rizal University.

The other featured speakers and their respective papers are as follows: Felipe Alfonso, co-vice chairman of the board of trustees of the Asian Institute of Management on "Professonalism and Succession in the Family-run Corporation"; Panfilo Domingo, chairman of the board of trustees of the University of the East on "Making the Transition to the Professional Corporation: Challenges for Educational Institutions"; Karen Tamayo, chancellor of the University of Perpetual Help System on "Professionalism and Succession in the Family-run Educational Institution"; Eulalia Lim, chairman of the board of trustees of the De La Salle University System, and Rev. Fr. Tamerlane Lana, OP, rector of the University of Sto. Tomas, on "Professionalism and Succession in the Congregationally-Managed Educational Institution."

The conference will also feature a workshop to be supervised by Dr. Roberto Borromeo, president of the Fund for Assistance to Private Education.

The conference-seminar was managed by a steering committee composed of the following: Dr. Maria Lim-Ayuyao, COCOPEA president, chairman; Dr. Edilberto de Jesus - vice president of the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities, member; and Borromeo - FAPE president, member.

The working committees were chaired by Vincent Fabella, vice president for academic affairs of Jose Rizal University. The chairpersons of the specific committees are as follows: physical arrangements, food and lodging - Dr. Jose Paolo Campos, president of Emilio Aguinaldo College; program organization - Vicente Fabella and Tina Bate, guidance director of Jose Rizal University; invitations - Dr. Mal Lim-Ayuyao, CEU executive vice president for academic affairs, and Carmelita Echauz-Lao, CEU vice president for business development; transportation - Mariano Piamonte, CEAP executive director; reservations and registration - Carol Porio, FAPE director for scholarships and externally funded programs, Greg Pascua, PACU executive director, and Marie Zaldivia, PACU executive secretary; publicity and documentation - Bettina Olmedo, FAPE director for institutional networking and development; sponsorship committee - Roberto Laurel, executive vice president of Lyceum.

The sponsors of the seminar-conference dinner are the Technological Institute of the Philippines and Globe Telecommunications.

The young school executives who will introduce the speakers are: Dr. Jose Paolo Campos; Vincente Fabella; Elizabeth Lahoz - vice president of the Technological Institute of the Philippines; Mariano Jhocson IV, vice president for administration of the National University; Roberto Laurel; and Guiana Romero-Salas, trustee of the Far Eastern University.
