Graffiti walls up soon - Binay

In line with his commitment to put an end to graffiti and vandalism in the metropolis, Metro Manila Development Authority chairman Jejomar Binay has identified a total of 23 sites for the establishment of the so-called "democracy walls."

All 23 sites are strategically located along major thoroughfares of Metro Manila covering seven cities where most of the graffiti are found. According to Binay, he has already informed all seven mayors about the plan to put up 3.8 meters by three meter billboards as democracy walls in their respective territories.

Quezon City will have the most number of walls at seven. The specific areas are EDSA corner Ortigas Avenue; Commonwealth Avenue-Batasan area; EDSA-Balintawak Cloverleaf; EDSA corner Quezon Boulevard; Quirino Highway corner Regalado Avenue; Quezon Avenue-Welcome Rotunda area; and the C-5-Katipunan area.

In Manila, the walls will be placed along España-Morayta Avenue; R. Magsaysay Avenue-Old Sta. Mesa center island; R. Magsaysay Avenue-Governor Forbes Rotunda area; Anda Circle; Luneta; and Quiapo-Plaza Miranda.

Makati will be having one at the Guadalupe Bridge; another at EDSA corner Ayala Avenue; and in C-5-Kalayaan Avenue and inside the Fort Bonifacio Global City.

Binay also reported that he has elicited the support of the labor group leaders for the MMDA's anti-graffiti program.

"Soon our countrymen who are fond of scribbling on public walls and fences will have a specially designated place within to write their slogans and messages. This way we will be helping not only to maintain cleanliness in our surroundings but also save government efforts and funds spent to beautify these places," Binay said.
