MANILA, Philippines — The countdown to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics begins.

“We’re celebrating Olympic Day worldwide,” said Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino during Tuesday's Olympic Day celebration at the Tagaytay City Velodrome.

Tolentino said while the next Olympics is still 752 days away, preparations to qualify to LA are now afoot.

“There will be sports in the Asian Games (Japan) where if you win a gold, you will qualify straight to the LA Olympics,” he said. “I won’t announce what sports events are those, but there will be three or four that would stake automatic Olympic slots.”

The country, of course, is eyeing not just to make it to LA but also add more gold haul after weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz won one in Tokyo and gymnast Carlos Yulo pocketed two in Paris.

“That’s our hope,” he said.

No less than Olympic boxing medalists Carlo Paalam and Aira Villegas, and former PBA star Larry Fonacier attended the one-day festivity, along with sports officials Marcus Manalo of boxing, Richard Lim of karate, Ali Sulit of judo, Wharton Chan of kickboxing, and Rocky Samson of taekwondo.

Around 500 children attended the event where they got to try Olympic disciplines basketball, boxing, football, baseball, wrestling and taekwondo.
