Metro Cebu air still “unhealthy”

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Metro Cebu’s air quality plunged to “very unhealthy” levels early yesterday until midday but showed slight improvement, settling at “unhealthy for sensitive groups” by 4 p.m.

According to the Environmental Management Bureau in Central Visayas (EMB-7), PM2.5 concentrations reached 165 AQI at 7:00 a.m. and 158 AQI at 11:00 a.m., before easing to 149 AQI in the afternoon.

The advisory stressed that while conditions have improved, vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory illnesses, remain at risk.

EMB urged those with asthma and other respiratory conditions to limit outdoor exertion and continue wearing protective masks when outside.

In stark contrast, monitoring data from Toledo City’s Cabitoonan Station reported consistently “Good” air quality, with AQI readings yesterday.

PAGASA-7 earlier declared the official end of the southwest monsoon (Habagat), noting the presence of a strengthening high-pressure system over East Asia.

This shift has created cooler ambient temperatures that trap fine particulate matter close to the ground, a phenomenon known as “temperature inversion.”

Without sufficient wind or rainfall, pollutants remain suspended in the lower atmosphere, intensifying exposure risks in Metro Cebu while leaving other areas relatively unaffected.

The latest figures extend a week-long pattern of unstable air quality in Metro Cebu.

October 8 registered “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups,” October 7 hit “Very Unhealthy” at 157 AQI, and October 6 shifted from “Fair” in the morning to “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” by late afternoon. October 5 also recorded unhealthy levels, continuing a streak dating back to September 30.

Health experts emphasize that PM2.5, fine particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, is among the most dangerous pollutants, capable of penetrating deep into the lungs and bloodstream.

The World Health Organization warns that prolonged exposure can lead to respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular disease, and increased mortality.

EMB-7 continues to monitor AQI levels in real time and has assured the public of regular updates.

Residents are advised to remain vigilant, minimize outdoor activities, and follow official advisories until atmospheric conditions stabilize. - (CEBU NEWS)
