MANILA, Philippines — Derick Cabrido (left) won the Best Director for Clarita and Cristine Reyes (right) Best Actress for Untrue at the 40th Fantasporto International Film Festival held in Teatro Rivoli in Portugal.
Also written by Cabrido, Clarita (played by Jodi Sta. Maria) is the story of a young woman apprehended and held by police when they suspect that she is possessed by a demon. In 2015, Cabrido’s Children’s Show won the Special Jury Prize in the Official Orient Express Section.
Cristine plays Mara in Untrue, a battered wife who seeks the help of police against her husband Joachim (Xian Lim) where truth, lies and dark past were uncovered. Shot in Tbilisi, Georgia, the film was written and directed by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo.
Other major awardees were Ghost Master by Paul Young of Japan (Best Film), Dancing Mary by Sabu of Japan (Jury’s Special Award), Leif Edlund for Koko-Di Koko-Da by Johannes Nyholm of Sweden/Denmark (Best Actor), Chris Bavota and Paula Springer of Canada for Dead Dicks (Best Screenplay) and Ilya Maximov of Russia for The Soul Conductor (Best Visual Effects).
Twenty feature films competed including those from Taiwan, Mexico, Argentina, Finland, Bulgaria and Brazil. The third Philippine entry was Guitarist by Jason Orfalas.
