MANILA, Philippines – John Arcilla (photo) is nominated for Best Actor (for Jerrold Tarog’s Heneral Luna) at the 10th Asian Film Awards (AFA) as officially announced by the Asian Film Awards Academy in Hong Kong on Wednesday, Feb. 3.
Arcilla is up against four other Asian actors: Donnie Yen, Ip Man 3 (Hong Kong); Masatoshi Nagase, An (Japan); Feng Xiaogang, Mr. Six (Mainland China); and Lee Byung-hun, Inside Men (South Korea).
Heneral Luna received two other nominations: Best Costume Design for Carlo Tabije and Best Production Design for Tabije and Benjamin Padero.
Dubbed as “The Oscars of Asia,” the AFA celebrates excellence in Asian cinema. The academy reported that for this edition it had received nearly 1,600 submissions from 32 countries of different genres. Out of these, 77 nominations were drawn up for 15 awards representing 36 films from nine countries.
Johnnie To Kei-Fung, a world-renowned Hong Kong director, heads the jury with 14 members who are respected film industry professionals, festival programmers and film critics.
The awarding ceremony will be held at The Venetian Macau on March 17.
