Bobby Gonzales: Singing sensation

Cover of album of classic hits

In the ’50s and early ’60s, Bobby Gonzales was a singing sensation onstage and in recording.

He popularized songs like Hahabol-Habol, Inday ng Buhay Ko, Ikaw ang Mahal Ko and I’m Gonna Live (Till I Die). The last title was originally recorded by American singer Johnny Ray, but Bobby’s version became an even bigger hit.

Bobby topbilled stage shows at the Manila Grand Opera House and Clover Theater, at times in tandem with jazz queen Mommy Kate (Katy dela Cruz). He also toured the provinces and US cities where there were large Filipino communities. Mommy Kate and Bobby wowed American audiences in Clark Field and Subic Naval Base.

He also guested in a few movies, including one of the sequels to Lo’ Waist Gang, where he sang Inday ng Buhay Ko.

Bobby stayed briefly in the US and then came home to continue entertaining local fans. —RKC
