Philippine television’s longest-running English newscast The World Tonight has just become beefier and better as it enters its 49th year on air.
With a longer running time of one hour, it is a newscast complete with the day’s most important local and global stories.
The World Tonight, which now comes in at 9 p.m. as ANC’s first evening news program, is bringing in a team of the most trusted names in news to cover various issues.
Main anchor Tina Monzon-Palma is joined by Tony Velasquez for political and economic issues, Coco Alcuaz and Warren de Guzman for business, TJ Manotoc for sports, and Marie Lozano for entertainment, culture and lifestyle. Columnist extraordinaire Teddy Boy Locsin completes the cast with his Teditorial segment.
The new The World Tonight offers not just a rundown of the day’s most important news but also a non-traditional flow of newscast with the introduction of new segments such as the Metro Wrap, which showcases the most important local news, from politics, to the courts, and crime; In The Zone, a segment dedicated to the drama and action behind the hottest sports personalities and events; and Scene, which features specials on entertainment and culture with focus on celebrities, artists, designers and popular newsmakers.
The newscast also provides a sneak peek into the stories that will air in Business Nightly, which airs right after it.
Veteran journalist and The World Tonight supervising producer Luz Rimban said the relaunch is meant to revitalize the program as ANC’s flagship newscast by beefing up its content with more storytelling and interactive stories, allowing for a deeper look at issues relevant to the viewers.
“We’re looking at this as one of the steps of the internationalization of ANC and The World Tonight. Our mission and our vision is to produce premium original content, and take a wider view of events in the country and region to help viewers make sense of the world,” Rimban said.
The newscast’s main anchor Monzon-Palma also serves as its managing editor. With four decades of experience in the field as both journalist and news executive, Monzon-Palma vets all the stories that come out in The World Tonight to make sure viewers get only the most credible news and information. She will also contribute special reports to the program on her social and economic causes and activities, as well as her food and other lifestyle choices.
One of the newscast’s signature segments, Teditorial has also been made to be more visually appealing and understandable to viewers, with Locsin sharing his sharp, intelligent opinions on the pressing issues of the day.
