MANILA, Philippines - Like a stylized Muslim princess, 2010 Miss Universe fourth runner-up Venus Raj paraded in a slender pewter gown with a neckline adorned with marina patterns from the Sulu Sea and was crowned with a ruffled turban. On the other hand, Marina Benipayo’s billowy and shimmery cloak and gown, encrusted with fastidious beadwork, mimicking the sea coral was also glistening under the sun.

A fascination for Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao’s (ARMM) marine life was translated in the fashion collection of Tausug designer, Amir Sali, one of the highlights of Gabi ng Kultura at Kasaysayan at the 25th anniversary celebration of ARMM. Held at the ARMM compound in Cotabato City, the event was one of the last hurrahs of the ARMM. It was attended by Lanao’s local government officials headed by town mayors Nashiba Sumagayan, Ahl Sumandar, Al Rashid Macapodi and Mamintal Razuman; Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) assistant secretary Nariman Ambolodto.
As the pride of the region, Sali combined haute couture sensibility with an imagination for the sublime. Beyond fashion, he created spectacles with lavish fabrics interpreted in unconventional silhouettes, exaggerated ruffles and fastidious beadwork and embroidery. Thus, the title “Prince of Beads.” The creative palette went beyond gowns. Sali produced dramatic headdresses and turbans in outlandish shapes to create a total unique look.
“ARMM’s 25th year was more remarkable and sentimental yet grander,” said Princess Sitti Djalia Hataman.
The event also featured the rich culture of the Maranao, Yakan, Tausog, Iranun and Maguindanaons. Visitors experienced the unique architecture of the South in the mini-village, the exotic songs and dances and the costume parade.
After 25 years, the ARMM will give way to the new Bangsamoro government which will inherit a “silver lining from a reformed ARMM bureaucracy,” said Regional Gov. Mujiv Hataman.
The ARMM is composed of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Basilan and the Islamic City of Marawi and Lamitan City. The month-long anniversary celebration will end tomorrow, Dec. 19. — Ayunan Gunting
