PLDT marks six years of Gabay Guro with biggest celebration yet

MANILA, Philippines - This coming Oct. 27, PLDT-Smart Foundation will celebrate six years of Gabay Guro, a major advocacy that gives support to Filipino teachers and various public schools.

The Gabay Guro Grand Gathering will be held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, and will be the biggest celebration this year in honor of these men and women who have devoted their lives to educating Filipino children.

Celebrity guests will be in attendance to pay tribute, including Marian Rivera, Ogie Alcasid and Pops Fernandez.

There will also be several exciting prizes in store for teachers. Last year, celebrity guests joined Gabay Guro chair Chaye Cabal-Revilla in raffling off several laptops, LED TVs and mobile phones. The grand prize was a house and lot sponsored by Camella Homes, which went to Sarah Jane Gabat, a grade two teacher from Comembo Elementary School, Makati City. This year, Gabay Guro says there will be even more and bigger surprises to look forward to.

This year alone, Gabay Guro awarded scholarship grants to 98 aspiring teachers from 26 partner schools nationwide. These college students majoring in education, and in situations of financial need, received scholarships that covered tuition and other fees, and a monthly stipend, allowing them to finish their degrees and join the esteemed ranks of Filipino schoolteachers. Gabay Guro is gearing toward increasing the number of grants to 150 and expanding their reach by reaching out to new partner schools.

Gabay Guro is supported by the PLDT-Smart Foundation of the Manny V. Pangilinan group. It is the brainchild of MVP’s VP for Finance, Chaye, and was established in 2007. To date, they have given scholarships to 585 aspiring teachers and conducted training programs that have benefited over 12,000 more. They also provide teachers with livelihood and housing options, and help improve educational facilities through building new classrooms and installing broadband connections and computers in various schools nationwide.
