Pointen invades Manila

MANILA, Philippines - Korean pop has been big in Manila with several groups and artists that have gained a following among local fans.

One aspiring group is the all-female K-pop quartet called Pointen, who recently visited the country.

The name Pointen came from “ten points,” which implies an expression of perfection, readiness and extraordinary skills.

The quartet, composed of two Filipino and two Korean girls, is a breakthrough fusion of two countries and cultures. Each of the girls has a distinct personality that will make fans admire the ladies individually.

Yuju leads the girls in terms of vocals. Her distinctive babyish voice allows her to stand out among the rest of her group mates. She is likewise an expressive dancer, who underwent rigorous training as a traditional Korean performer and has won awards.

Vicc’s seemingly fragile image is a far contrast from her powerful voice and assertive dance moves. She has a striking figure, attractive face and flawless Korean speaking skills. When she performs onstage, Vicc displays her versatility to the hilt, as she can sing and rap with equal ease.

Garyn is your typical Asian, with strong sex appeal but exuding with innocence. Her resumé boasts her extensive experience as a model in Korea. She was featured in a TV commercial for Samsung. Her dancing skills make her an important member of Pointen.

Sharlen looks boyish with her short hair, but always cuts an impressive figure once she starts singing. Her voice sounds very feminine, but with a brilliant range. She is the main vocalist of Pointen and her voice can blend well with the other members, making her ideal to perform group numbers or duets.

Pointen is out to make its mark in the Asian music scene with its unique music, moves and style, all geared towards capturing a strong following for the group.

The quartet complements their vocals with stand out moves that prove their terpsichorean talents, as well. Every time they perform onstage, the girls sport funky and colorful outfits that match their perky personalities.

The girls underwent extensive vocal and dance training in Korea under esteemed professionals who made sure the girls hone their talents.

Pointen’s debut album was mastered in Sonic Korea, a reputable outfit that also services famous Korean pop groups and artists such as Wonder Girls, Rain, 4Minute and Girls Generation.

The same band backing up Rain played for Pointen’s CD. The Korean-influenced music is complemented by English lyrics written by Filipino award-winning poet and university professor Mark Cayanan.

The selections tackle conventional topics like love and mirror the multi-faceted personalities of the girls of Pointen. The lyrics are inspirational and comforting, while at the same time impish and naughty.

Pointen’s debut album was produced by Macrolite Corporation and distributed locally by Sony Music.
