MANILA, Philippines - What makes Colin Scott, Chivas Regal global ambassador different from product endorsers gracing TV ads, radio plugs and billboards is, he creates the product. As master blender, Colin knows what excites the consumer’s palate.
“We know from way back that Frank Sinatra went to a bar in New York and ordered Chivas Regal,” replies Colin when asked about Hollywood stars who drink Chivas. “But over the years (we have seen) dignitaries and special people who do drink Chivas Regal.”
Chivas Regal is a global icon enjoyed by millions and millions of people around the world. And the brand’s strength lies on its style.
“Other brands have their own styles and taste experiences,” says Colin. “The Chivas Regal style goes back to the first Chivas Regal products blended in 1840.”
These products were amazingly experimented. Malt whiskies were mixed with grain whiskies. The brains behind Chivas created a smooth and rich whisky which has style of easy drinking with balance of flavors.
The traditions of blending flavors for Chivas make the brand classic and never go out of style.
What’s the first step for someone to appreciate spirits like Chivas?
“What I recommend you is you pour some Chivas and add some water. (That takes) away the aggression of the alcohol,” answers Colin. “Then you can take a sip. Within the glass, add some water, two rocks and just sip it. From there you can work on to discover these flavors.”
Again, the magic of Chivas is its rare flavor, character and taste experience. People can find delight in it. This is why Colin loves his work. Working for Chivas brings him closer to “people of all kinds” given the brand’s iconic stature. Another reason is, Colin says, he works with nature because Chivas is 100 percent natural.
“I am learning every day,” shares Colin. “It takes eight to 10 years to learn to become a master blender. You spend a lot of time understanding Chivas traditions, the blending, character and flavor. You’ve got to experience it in a company. I learned everything from my predecessors (all the master blenders) — formula, flavors, characters and age.”
How long does it take to create a blend like Chivas 25?
“It’s about six months to a year.”
Chivas Regal 25 Year Old was introduced to the public in 2007. It recently arrived in Manila via Chivas Original Dinner held at the Peninsula Manila’s Conservatory. Select members of society, politics, business, sports and entertainment attended the event. They savored Chivas 25’s taste of pure luxury. That’s the enticing aroma of sweet orange and peach, followed by notes of marzipan and nuts with hints of rich chocolate orange and fondant creaminess on the palate.
“It has been my life,” Colin adds. “You go in to the office, see a lot of whiskies and discover a little thing. It is wonderful.”
