Celebrating family and food

What do Sharon Cuneta, Tintin Bersola, Luis Manzano, Edu Manzano and RJ Ledesma have in common? They are exponents of Lucky Me!’s Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga (KPM) advocacy. Sharon, Tintin, Luis and Edu added glitz and glamor to the 2009 official launch held at Oakwood.

The advocacy helps bring back the nourishing tradition of family meals and emphasize the importance of regular family mealtime. It is a celebration of two things very near and dear to the Filipino heart — family and food.

The celebrity advocates believe in the value of family and eating together. Despite the punishing demands of their careers, they make time for family meals. During the launch, they also shared their own experiences and lessons learned at the dining table, encouraging more families to make time for regular family meals.

Here are what they say:

Sharon Cuneta — Remember life’s lessons at the dinner table.

Tintin Bersola — Make every meal time, family bonding time.

Luis Manzano — A family should always make time for dinner-always.

Edu Manzano — Bring back that loving feeling at the dinner table.

RJ Ledesma — The famealy that eats together stays together — and is very busog.

Today, eating together is less and less practiced by families. Among the reasons are fast-paced lifestyles and changing priorities. Lucky Me has seen it fit to bring back to our consciousness this heartwarming family tradition.

Initially launched in 2007, Lucky Me!’s Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga© (KPM) advocacy has led to a yearly nationwide celebration of Filipino family dining. Dubbed National FaMEALy Day, it is observed every fourth Monday of September and has become part of DSWD’s yearly Family Week Celebration.

This annual initiative was certified and made official in a Memorandum of Agreement signed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the National Committee on the Filipino Family (NCFF), and Monde Nissin Corporation. The National FaMEALy Day celebration has also been officially declared in a resolution from the local governments of Makati, Manila, Mandaluyong, Marikina, Quezon City, Navotas, Taguig, Dagupan, Pasay, and Pasig.

Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga© recently bagged top honors in this year’s Tambuli Awards: Bronze for “Best Insights and Strategic Thinking”, another bronze for “Best Established Product Campaign” and silver for “Most Effective Family Oriented Brand Campaign.”

Its advocacy TV commercial, titled Maka-Diyos won best branded TVC in the recently concluded Catholic Mass Media Awards, one of the country’s most well-respected and credible award-giving bodies spearheaded by leaders of the Catholic Church.

I remember my childhood in Samar where at 6 p.m., wherever I was (aside from stopping to pray the Angelus), I would sprint my way back home like an Angolan long distance runner because Tatay required that everyone was home by this time. Unless you’re dead, you had to be at the dinner table by 7 p.m. That was a rule no one dared break.
