MANILA, Philippines - Ryan Reynolds gives a riveting performance as the ruthless, wisecracking Wade Wilson, later known as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which also stars Hugh Jackman.
Central to the story is Wolverine’s battle between his human and animalistic sides, how he is tormented by the deep rage he cannot control. There is a bitter rivalry with his brother, Victor Creed/Sabretooth (Live Schreiber). One close, these men are now fierce enemies. Infused with hard-core action, the movie is thrilling roller coaster but also integral to the story is Logan/Wolverine’s tragic romance with the beautiful and mysterious Kayla Silverfox (Lynn Collins).
Ryan flexes his muscles as a highly efficient killing machine in the movie and relates on his most celebrated X-Men character in the following interview:
How will you describe Wade Wilson?
He is an elite mercenary who is hired by William Sryker (Danny Huston) to be part of a group carrying out very specific secret missions for the government. He’s an incredibly proficient swordsman and his weapon of choice is the Katana sword. He is also a motor mouth, which is why they call him the Merc with the Mouth. It was perfect for me because I have wanted to play this character for most of my adult life.
What are his special abilities or powers?
He has the ability to heal much in the same way that Wolverine does, and he is infused with Adamantium, the same alloy or metal that Wolverine has in his body. So he’s the only one who could kill Wolverine. That is why they created him, to do just that.
Did the role require you to be in peak physical shape?
Yes, it entailed months and months of work, packing on as much muscle as I possibly could. My diet involved a lot of protein, a lot of meat. My program was actually very similar to Hugh’s.”
How dark and exciting is the movie?
It is fairly dark. I think it’s brutal and honest and very cool and the action is ugly and magnificent, which I like.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine opens April 30 in theaters nationwide.
